Strategy Written with Care

Compass Loom is a Kuala Lumpur consulting practice. We help organisations produce written strategy through structured conversation — not off-the-shelf frameworks or slide-driven workshops.

Our Story

How Compass Loom Came About

Compass Loom was established in Kuala Lumpur by a small group of practitioners who had each spent a decade in large consulting organisations and noticed a persistent gap. The organisations that most needed sound strategic thinking — smaller businesses, family-led companies, and growing institutions — were routinely priced out of serious advisory work, or offered a diluted version that left them holding a presentation rather than a document they could use.

The practice was built around a simple principle: a direction statement written down, agreed by the leadership group, and kept plainly worded is worth considerably more than the same ideas left in meeting notes or in a consultant's head. Every engagement we undertake produces a written output that the organisation owns outright.

The name comes from two instruments of patient craft. A loom holds threads in tension and turns them into cloth; a compass holds a bearing and keeps the traveller oriented. Together they describe what we try to do: hold the organisation's thinking in productive tension while keeping the work pointed toward a usable outcome.

We work exclusively with small and mid-sized organisations, which means our practice is shaped by the realities those organisations face. Decisions move quickly, the leadership group is often the same small set of people, and there is rarely a dedicated strategy function. Our engagements are designed to fit that context: structured enough to produce something durable, light enough not to consume the organisation's operating capacity.

Our team has worked with organisations in professional services, manufacturing, education, healthcare administration, and social enterprise. We do not specialise by sector. We specialise in the craft of translating conversation into clear written direction — and that skill transfers across industries.

"Our purpose is to leave every organisation with a written direction it trusts — one its people helped shape and can act from."

How We Work

Our Working Standards

Written-First Discipline

Every engagement produces a document the client organisation owns. We do not deliver conclusions verbally or in slide decks alone. The writing discipline is not a formatting preference — it shapes how ideas are tested and how agreements are kept.

Structured Interview Process

Interviews follow a consistent structure designed to surface both stated and unstated views. Notes are taken, reviewed, and returned to the interviewee for accuracy before being incorporated into any draft.

Two-Round Review Cycle

Drafts are shaped through exactly two structured rounds of comment. This keeps revision productive and prevents the document from drifting through open-ended iteration. The process concludes at a defined point.

Client Confidentiality

We do not discuss client engagements with other clients, reference client organisations in our communications, or share materials outside the engagement without written consent. Confidentiality is treated as a practice standard, not a clause in a contract.

Vendor-Independent Advice

We accept no referral fees, commissions, or undisclosed arrangements from technology providers, recruitment firms, or any third party. Recommendations are shaped by the client's context alone.

Data Handling Practice

Engagement documents and interview notes are stored securely and retained only for the period required to complete the work. Clients may request deletion of materials at the end of an engagement. Our data practices comply with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

Values & Expertise

What We Stand For

Strategy consulting in Malaysia has historically been the domain of large international firms whose engagement models were designed for large organisations and priced accordingly. Compass Loom was built to serve the organisations that fall between those options and no option at all — companies with serious strategic questions and leadership teams capable of engaging with them, who simply cannot afford three months of a Big Four engagement.

Our approach draws on practices from organisational design, document-centred consulting, and facilitation. We do not present ourselves as specialists in any particular industry. The skill we offer is the ability to hold a complex leadership conversation, represent each voice fairly in a written synthesis, and produce a document that the organisation's people recognise as their own — not as something produced for them by an outsider.

We operate from Bangsar Baru, Kuala Lumpur, and work with clients across Peninsular Malaysia. For organisations in Sabah, Sarawak, or neighbouring countries, engagements are conducted primarily by video call with one or two in-person sessions where the work calls for it.

The values that shape how we work are legibility — keeping language plain and avoiding consulting jargon; fidelity — representing what we hear accurately, not what we think should be heard; and restraint — knowing when the work is done and the client should be left to act, rather than extending the engagement unnecessarily.

Work With Us

Ready to put your strategy in writing?

Most engagements begin with a short conversation about the organisation's current position and what a written direction might accomplish. We are glad to have that conversation at no charge.
